The strong climate change policy is a vote-changing matter for the majority of Australians according to a new poll, which established the issue as an important battleground a week before the start of the election campaigns, reported SMH.
ReachTEL surveyed 2400 people, which conducted coalition of environmental groups, 64% of the correspondents said they would more likely to vote for a party that seeks 100% renewable energy in 20 years and 48% they would support a party that helps in reducing the country’s net carbon emissions to zero by the year 2050. 56.4% of the respondents want the government to do more on climate change while 27.8% think that the present settings are right and 9.9% want less action.
The numbers contrast with Turnbull government’s avoidance of the topic. The PM did not make any mention of climate change in his speech when kicking off the election campaign.
The Coalition on the other hand is adamant about 26-28% cut on 2005 emission levels by the year 2030 by way of their multi-billion dollar emission reduction fund and 23% clean energy production by the year 2020. The Greens want a 63%-82% equivalent cut to emissions and 90% renewable energy by 2030.
