Renewable Energy Magazine reported that Ethanol Technologies (Ethtec) has received a $11.9 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and partnerships with the University of Newcastle, Muswellbrook Shire Council, and Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources.
Ethtec will develop an environmentally sustainable process to produce biofuels and other renewable chemicals using waste from crops and forestry.
This project is about developing the engineering data behind the process to ensure it is commercially viable. We know you can take waste streams, convert them into sugars and then turn those sugars into biofuels or green chemicals, but it’s got to be competitive with crude oil products.
Dr. Geoff Doherty, Ethtec senior biotechnologist
This renewable project will take advantage of the $130 billion ethanol industry that is presently only made up just 1% of Australia’s fuel use.
