PV Tech reported that a database project involving integration of renewable energy into the grid has been launched by Energy Networks Australia (ENA) and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to help collaborate between renewables industry and the grid operators in Australia.
The “Renewables Integration Stocktake 233” details, both in Australia and in other countries, in order to share information quickly and help grids and renewables teams to learn from the past issues and experiences. Other goals include improving cost-efficiencies and informing regulatory environment for renewable energy.
Grid integration of renewables (specifically wind) has been a fiercely debated topic in Australia in the 2nd half of 2016, following a major blackout in South Australia. Different energy bodies blamed the blackouts on wind and solar integration, while others pointed out unreasonable extreme weather and the maintenance of an interconnection as the key issues.
Australia’s leaders of major energy bodies and businesses met during December to discuss the need for immediate, national reform to energy policy to accommodate the increasing amount of renewables in the energy mix.
