Scotland is not known for future renewable electricity setups but the 12-square mile island of Eigg has become a very good example of how off-the-grid communities can do it themselves with clean energy as reported by Inhabitat.
Eigg made the brave move in 2008 to replace their noisy diesel-generated power in favour of an off-grid electric system that uses wind, water and solar power. It’s the community’s first in making this bold decision and the good thing about this is, the clearly self-reliant residents pretty much taught themselves how to build and run the renewable energy system.
The community will also have power available 24 hours daily for the first time as compared to using the diesel generators that they can use for a small part of the day.
