According to a new study by the University of New South Wales, Australia’s rooftops are well suited for solar panels but many are not taking advantage of the benefits as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Here are the key takeaways from the study:
- 40% of Sydney’s rooftop are suited for solar power installations and can produce an output of a medium-sized coal-powered station.
- Currently only 1% of the Sydney’s roof space have solar panels installed.
- The UNSW study was prepared for the Australian Photovoltaic Institute (APVI).
- The study is thorough, taking into account variables such as: hours of sunshine, orientation of solar panels, overshadowing from buildings and vegetation.
- Flat factory and warehouse roofing in Sydney suburbs are the top prospects for the 40% solar potential identified in the study.
Australia leads the world in rooftop solar, but there is still lots of potential for adding more solar, and it’s now the cheapest form of electricity generation.
