Tesla To Offer Free Solar Panels And Batteries to 50,000 Homes

The Independent UK reported that Tesla boss Elon Musk has agreed to build the world’s largest virtual power plant. This is another big project after Tesla, Neoen and the South Australian government made the largest lithium-ion battery, also located in South Australia.

Tesla will be rolling out solar panels and Tesla batteries to 50,000 South Australian homes. This is how it works – it will be rolled out and completed over the next 4 years and all of the excess energy stored in each battery will be fed back to the grid to provide power to the rest of South Australia whenever needed.

Other attributes of the ambitious project include:

  • The initial trial will include installing 5-kilowatt-hour solar panel systems with a 13.5 kilowatt-hours Tesla Powerwall 2 battery for free in 1,100 state-owned properties.
  • Participating households will expect their electricity bills to go down by 30%.
  • The whole system will also produce 20% of the state’s daily energy requirement.
