Willing state governments could join together in implementing a new clean energy target that is consistent with the central recommendation of the Finkel Review if the Turnbull government can’t deliver the needed leadership on a post-2020 scheme.
Victoria’s climate and energy minister, Lily D’Ambrosio told the Guardian Australia that state governments going it alone were a real possibility if the Turnbull government could not determine a position on the clean energy target in time for a meeting of energy ministers.
She said that if the Australian states emerged from the meeting with no clear resolution on the clean energy target they could ask the Australian Energy Market Commission to provide advice on how the scheme could be implemented by the state government action.
