The West Australian reported that Premiere Mark McGowan should request Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg to assess the possibility of making Western Australia the east coast’s solar battery source.
The project would need a 1,800 km bi-directional High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line from Kalgoorlie, to the start of the east coast grid at Port Augusta.
HVDC is a low-energy-loss technology as compared with the common alternating current systems. The technology also uses overhead lines and converter stations in transferring power over distances of up to 3,000 km.
A state-wide solar network that acts as a battery, enhanced by wind energy and Western Australia-based gas power plants will surely add an enormous flexibility to the national grid.
