Zero Emission Gas Network in Australia’s Future

The Australian gas Networks announced that they will play an important role in a trial to produce hydrogen from water for injection into gas networks as reported by Gas World.

Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has funded AGN in Adelaide to enable them to trial a new electrolyser that uses electricity to split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. The project will be funded by a $5 million grant from ARENA. The test would inject hydrogen in small quantities into the gas distribution network that is owned by AGN.

The key takeaways are:

  • The process is called “power-to-gas”.
  • The process will provide long-term energy storage and will help stabilise wind and solar power.
  • The process will make use of excess wind power.
  • The project will show that natural gas networks can be used efficiently for renewable energy.
